Get to know your organizers! Ten questions with Eric Gifford

1. Tell us a little about yourself...

I'm originally from the east coast, but have been living in the bay area for almost 8 years now. I like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain... just kidding! I've always enjoyed games, but after moving to the bay area I found some friends who real “gamers” and I were got much more into the hobby. I love introducing people to new games and getting them excited about learning to play.  Outside of board games, I'm also an avid cook, and I've recently learned to knit. My other volunteer gig is for SFSI on their information hotline. I like to think I'm a little bit of a geek girl, a title of which I'm rather proud, though it's been years since I was an engineering student so I may no longer technically qualify. Oh, and I'm really excited about KublaCon this year!

2. What do you do at KublaCon?

This is my first year on staff; I'm the Beginner's Track Coordinator. This means I run the area where we set up introductory games for people who are new to gaming or would like to learn types of games they have never tried before. I'm really excited to see how this works out and get feedback from attendees. I'm hoping attendees will get excited about it.

3. How did you get involved with KublaCon and how long have you been here?

My partner, Brian, is on staff and brought me along to Kubla last year, and that was my first time at the convention. I had a great time volunteering, playing games and meeting people there.  When I heard that the staff needed help, I decided that it's definitely something in which I'd like to participate.

4. What motivates you and what rewards to you get out of being involved with KublaCon?

I think the convention is a great service to the gaming community. It really gives people a chance to connect with others who share interests and to check out what's new and exciting in gaming. Especially for people who do not have a local game store, or who haven't been exposed to games beyond the usual Monopoly, this is a great place to discover new styles of games they may not have been aware even existed before. So that's really what motivates me and makes me feel rewarded at the same time, sharing gaming with other people, introducing them to something that is great fun.

5. What is your earliest gaming or game convention memory?

I can remember playing games at home with my family from a very young age. We always did puzzles, board games and card games around the table together.

6. What is your favorite gaming or game convention memory?

Last year at KublaCon, some friends and I were playing the demo version of the Game of Redneck Life. The game rep gave us all fake bad teeth to wear and we had little magnetic biker dudes stuck to beer bottle caps as game pieces. We all did our poor imitations of our characters through kids, marriage, divorce, debt, remarriage, etc, yukking it up. It was some of the silliest, most fun gaming I've ever experienced. Though I will admit, I'm glad we don't have photos.

7. What is your least favorite gaming or game convention memory?

It involves playing Dungeons & Dragons at the age of 13 with a group of hack&slash-loving boys. Need I say more?

8. Give us a top 3 list of your favorite games and tell us your least favorite game.

I am currently partial to Thurn and Taxis, Ticket to Ride Europe, and always Settlers of Catan.

My least favorite game, I'd have to go with Diplomacy. I used to really enjoy it, but these days it just isn't as much fun for me anymore. In part, I suppose, it's because I was never very good at it.

9. Where do you currently play games and what do you play when you are there?

We have a group of friends that gets together for games at least once a month, as well as other friends that enjoy playing games with us on a less regular basis. We play a variety of board/card games, lately a lot of Princes of Florence, Inkognito, Caylus, Citadels, Guillotine, and Saboteur.

10. If you could tell all of the KublaCon attendees something, what would it be?

Bring your friends and your family with you, KublaCon has something for everyone from kids to new players to hobby gamers, and we'd love to have everyone here for a great weekend of fun and games.
