Get to know your organizers! Ten questions with James "Jay" Fitch

1. Tell us a little about yourself...

Originally from Chi-town (Chicago). Moved here in 1980 after serving in the Army. Been married 27 years and have 2 sons and a 7 year old grandson. Was very involved in Boy Scout adult leadership training since 1989. Started playing MERP and D&D at Tita’s House of Games in Alameda mid 80’s. Played and collected Magic since Dundracon 1994. I enjoy Euro Board Games and many card games now. Used to work with LAGA (Live Action Gaming Association) and we ran midnight “Aliens” and “Awful Green Things from Outer Space” games. I was the bug cheerleader! Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!

2. What do you do at KublaCon?

This year I stepped up to help coordinate all collectable game events.  With the help of the collectable card games (CCG) and the collectable miniatures / board games (CMBG) assistants, we recruit tournament Directors and players for all types of popular collectable card and mini games.

3. How did you get involved with KublaCon and how long have you been here?

I knew Japji from long before (my first con was Dundracon 14?) and I too bought Spell Ground mats and Formula De! ManaFest was great but I was very involved in scouting at the time so I was always only a player. I worked as a volunteer in 2005 and I was an RPG Asst. last year.

4. What motivates you and what rewards to you get out of being involved with KublaCon?

I strive to give the best gaming experience to attendees as possible. This is their time to escape and have fun! Playing their favorite games! The reward I get is a job well done – smiling faces – and GM's and players coming back next year! As well as the camaraderie of the KC staff! Bunny, Bunny!

5. What is your earliest gaming or game convention memory?

I was a level 1 Merp Beorning (correct me if I’m wrong Carl lol). I could NOT do the transformation automatically – I was too “young”. So the other players, every time there was a threat, would beat on me to make me turn into a killer “bear” who would go berserk and kill anything! Tita’s House of Games

6. What is your favorite gaming or game convention memory?

I was running a D&D game for my brothers and sisters when I visited Chicago. Two of them decided to invade the forbidden jungle – got caught – and made a god call. They got a response - but it was from Loki - who told them they must go back and secretly sacrifice the Party Leader! The chaos that ensued is still talked about after 18 yrs! Lol

But I do have to say my favorite role playing trick was the “something is moving in the bushes” – usually a skunk lol! People caught before always laughed the loudest.

7. What is your least favorite gaming or game convention memory?

Working for a month to put on a Quality researched MERP event at a con and only having 2 people show up for an 8 player game (I hate 8am games) – and not running the event I planned!

My son borrowed my super Magic Atog deck. You know the one with all the moxes and lotus and powerful (expensive) low cost colorless and red/green (Berserk) cards. Lost it! We backtracked every step he took. It was a tense hour!

(Fortunately, we backtracked his wandering into the dealers room and one of our dealers found it and after a few questions gave it back – whew – best and worst)

8. Give us a top 3 list of your favorite games and tell us your least favorite game.

Currently - Settlers of Catan – Cities and Knights with/without expansions, Munchkin – we play expansions too, Puerto Rico with expansion

Least favorite is any “Online” Poker – But I still keep playing lol

9. Where do you currently play games and what do you play when you are there?

We have a games night at my house every Wednesday and I go to many of the cons. I have the honor (Hmm) of being the game “rules judge” and introducing games to the group. Mostly, we play card or European board games.

10. If you could tell all of the KublaCon attendees something, what would it be?

Have Fun! Rest! Have Fun! Shower! Then have more Fun! Do something (play a game/attend a seminar) that you haven’t done before but was always interested in! There is so much to do! But remember to have FUN!
