Get to know your organizers! Ten questions with Jordan Walraven

1. Tell us a little about yourself...

Hi there. My name is Jordan Walraven. I have been a miniature gamer for a disturbingly long time. I am a graduating senior (hopefully) at UC Santa Cruz. Most of my free time is split between playing miniatures games and reading comics. I am a giant comic geek.

2. What do you do at KublaCon?

I am the Miniature Coordinator at KublaCon. From what I understand this means I am responsible for everything that goes wrong in the miniature department. Besides getting yelled at by people to do stuff faster, I am also responsible for organizing and scheduling the fantasy and sci-fi miniatures games at the convention.

3. How did you get involved with KublaCon and how long have you been here?

This will be my first year working for KublaCon. I got involved with KublaCon by being the only person dumb enough not to run for the door when they finished explaining what my work load and responsibilities would be. In truth I got involved because the big names at Kubla were looking for someone to step into the shoes of Jason Ellis (the previous and vastly more qualified and organized miniatures coordinator) and my name came up.

4. What motivates you and what rewards to you get out of being involved with KublaCon?

There are rewards for doing this? No one told me there were rewards.

5. What is your earliest gaming or game convention memory?

My earliest gaming memory is from when I was 10 or 11. My parents own a toy store and Games Workshop sent us a demo pack of their products. In the pack was a Lemon Russ Battle Tank. I took one look at that tank and said this is what I want to do. I dove in head first and have not come up for air yet.

6. What is your favorite gaming or game convention memory?

At Comic Con two years ago I was able to meet and talk to Greg Rucka. He is my favorite comic book author so it was incredible to get a chance to meet and talk to him.

7. What is your least favorite gaming or game convention memory?

That would be playing Flames of War with my local game group and rolling 8 ones in a row. It was a truly horrible experience. On the other hand it was so pathetic it was funny. Oh terrible luck, good times.

8. Give us a top 3 list of your favorite games and tell us your least favorite game.

1. Infinity, this is an incredible sci fi miniatures game with some of the nicest miniatures on the market right now.
2. Soccer Tactics World, this is a great board game where the players simulate a soccer game. Lots of fun.
3. Warmachine, this is a great miniatures game with wonderful rules and great minis
My least favorite game! out there is either Shoots and Ladders or Candy Land. I work in a toy store and it is painful when I have to sell people these awful games.

9. Where do you currently play games and what do you play when you are there?

Well my local hangout is the local game store in my home town, Gamescape North.

When I am there I play: Warhammer, Infinity, Magic the Gathering, WOW TCG, Battletech, Flames of War, Lord of the Rings, Blood Bowl, and Warmachine. I also go there on Thursdays and play a wide selection of board games.

10. If you could tell all of the KublaCon attendees something, what would it be?

Sports Jelly Beans. They pack easy, are tasty and are filled with lots and lots of sugar. Great for getting through those energy lulls during the Con.
