Greetings from the Kublacon RPG staff! Help Wanted!: We are looking for a few GM’s to help out with our Mega Dungeon Crawl so please contact us as soon as possible so we can get you set up to help out! The RPGA has almost 90 events scheduled with over 25 different modules for RPGA players to participate in this year. Warhorn is open again for pre-registering your RPGA characters for all of these events. You can check it out at: http://www.warhorn.net/kublacon2005 Combined with the 137 Role Playing Games scheduled, we have (for the second year in a row) reached our goal to provide over 200 games for Role Playing enthusiasts like you this year. Woo Hoo! Special RPG Guests and Events: Keith Baker who is the lead author of the Eberron Campaign Setting and various other D20 sourcebooks from Atlas Games, Goodman Games and Green Ronin will be joining us at KublaCon this year. He has agreed to run a two Eberron D20 games for us (among other things) so be on the lookout for these exciting events. Dungeon Majesty will be attending KublaCon. Dungeon Majesty is a group of Hollywood gamers who turned their triumphal adventures into a local Public Access television show and they will do a live webcast right here at KublaCon! Dungeon Majesty, Episode 6, will be shot entirely on location at KublaCon so would you like to have a cameo in this special episode? If so please report to: “The Grand Foyer Have a cameo in the Dungeon Majesty KublaCon Adventure!” on Friday, Sat, and Sunday from 1-5pm. Thomas Denmark (creator of the Dungeoneer card game) will be running an event for his new Dungeoneer role-playing system. This is of course based on his very popular card game and we can’t wait to see it. Of course we have game companies galore coming to support, run and/or sell there wares at the Convention this year. AEG and Chaosium Inc. (including Chaosium’s Charlie Krank) will be at the convention and we are excited about seeing them support the RPG area. We are also jazzed about prize support from companies like Wizards of the Coast, Eden Studios, Mongoose Publishing, Steve Jackson Games, Hero Games and West End Games to just name a few! Proving Ground Productions is once again running their ever popular dungeon crawl / battle royal adventure, The Catacombs of Menzoberranzan where 4 groups of 6 people first battle the dangers and deceptions of the dungeon and then battle each other to the last group standing! For the third year in a row, KublaCon has hosted the annual Western Regional HackMaster Championship sponsored by the NorCalHMA Chapter. Everyone goes home with cool KenzerCo swag and bragging rights. Last year's top prize was a complete basic HackMaster library, the GMG, PHP, all 8 HoBs and the Monster Matrix, several of them autographed! Trial HackMaster Association memberships are available and if you're reticent about going in cold, check out the HackMaster Remedial Tournament Preparation event, Friday at 8PM. Well that’s all we have for now. We can’t wait to see all of you folks at the Con, but until then, take care and take it easy!

The Beauty of Open Gaming: This year we have an expanded Open Gaming area, and MAN ARE YOU GOING TO LOVE IT! Right next to the Tabletop Area, the former Scalini's restaurant will be open for tabletop (and others) to enjoy. Though we have many events scheduled, we're sure you'll find your way into this new space, pull out a game, and appreciate the roominess. Look for us in the maroon vests, ask us to play a game if we look a bit stressed, and have a great time! Thanks Folks! A note from one of our TTG Assistant Coordinators: I absolutely can't wait for KublaCon. I work in the gaming industry in a job that I play broken games all the time... I'm super excited about KublaCon and I can't wait to see everyone there. Julie Haehn Our Beginner’s Track Do you have a friend or relative who has never been to a gaming convention before? Kublacon has now added a Beginners Track to our convention! Bring your friends down to the Beginners Track meeting area so they can learn how gaming conventions work, and try a quick demonstration of each of the major types of games. Here are some of the demos we may have:
So if you carpool with your friends, and they can learn about games through our Beginners Track…they’re left with very few excuses not to come with you. Thanks! :o) Collectable Card Games… May 27th is almost here!!! The CCG department has been hopping with excitement! The events schedule is finalized now with over 65 events in CCGS as well as ongoing Magic:TG events!
CCGs will also have plenty of more events. If you like Shadowfist you’ll find multiple events like Memory Processing and Whirlpool of Blood. And talk about dedicated players! They were the first ones in the CCG room and the last ones out last year. We also want to send our deepest thanks to the GMs, special guests, and volunteers running events this year. Because of them we are able to host a wide range of fantastic CCG events. We also wanted to thank David Gabriel, the editor of Khannections, who put in a lot of time and effort to make these newsletters happen. See you all at the end of the month! Kubla! Thanks! Matt Hoskins Magic: The Gathering Events Greetings Magic players! Get ready for more tournaments and prizes this year as we get closer to Memorial Day weekend! Kublacon will be hosting more sanctioned events than last year. We're also proud to host our first Junior Super Series Challenge here at Kublacon! The JSS is a great way for young amateur players 15 and under to earn great prizes and scholarships! And for you older players, ongoing sealed decks will be held throughout Saturday! Ever have a rules situation you didn't understand? Think you have what it takes to be a DCI Judge? We'll be having a magic rules seminar on Saturday for all magic players who are interested in becoming DCI judges or would like to know more about the complex rulings and situations that pop-up in tournaments. Afterwards, Don Barkauskus, DCI Judge Level 3 will be available to test anyone interested in becoming a Judge or advancing a current Judge's level. For more info on Magic or DCI rules, or Judging visit: www.thedci.com So bring your pen, cards, sleeves, counters, and your "A" Game and we'll see you there! -Paul Yale Kublacon Magic Events Coordinator! The War College is back! This series of seminars and games covers topics ranging from Alexander through Stalingrad. Hosted by military tacticians and game designers Dana Lombardy and Charles Sharp who are both well known historians with ties to the gaming community, we expect this to be an event not to miss! Even More Events! There are literally hundreds of independent game masters who have stepped up to run their events at KublaCon this year for you! Without these amazing individuals the KublaCon line-up would not be what it is. The MINS department and I extend our personal gratitude to all of those game masters who devote so much of their valuable personal time to make KublaCon the best gaming convention I’ve ever been to. This is but just a small sampling of the events that are waiting for YOU at KublaCon 2005! For more information about KublaCon Game Convention including hotel rooms, badges, and a full listing of our event schedule and special guests, please visit our site www.kublacon.com. (My apologies to anybody I left out. I could go on and on forever; unfortunately I just don’t have the space!) Do You Want to Help Run a Game Convention? Help wanted! The Miniatures Department is looking for energetic, passionate, and bright people to fill staff positions that will open up for KublaCon 2006. You should have excellent communication skills, work well in groups, and be able to take direction. Coordinators should also have initiative, be proactive, and be able to work on your own. Most of all, you need to be motivated to excel in your role and be passionate about gaming and the convention! We are currently looking to fill the following positions:
If you think you have what it takes to help run a game convention please e-mail me, See you at the Con! GO KUBLA! Jason Ellis - jason@kublacon.com Director of Miniatures Young Players Room… Yikes! KublaCon 2005 is just around the corner! We in the Young Player's room are getting the final pieces of our super cool schedule together... checking our lists... checking them twice. (GRIN) We've got more than 50 scheduled games just for young players this year! Some are our good old favorites (Zombies, Risk 2210, Blink, and many more) AND we've got some great new games this year! For those of you not familiar with the YP room - our goal is to provide a cool place for younger players (8-13) to try out all sorts of games in their own special space. Supervision is key for your child. Ages 5-7 must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian. Ages 8 and up may be left in the room without parental supervision. They may either have ‘in / out’ privileges or you may require them to be under our supervision at all times. Please let us know which when you sign your young player in! Parents are required to sign their young players into the room and to provide the staff either emergency contact phone numbers or information about where they will be at the Con. We usually have at least three to four staff on hand to help run games, and maintain a friendly, happening environment. There will be 20-30 boardgames on hand from Gimme the Brain, to Waterworks, to Settlers of Catan, to Risk 2210, to Kill Dr. Lucky. There will be simple tournaments for Harry Potter, Magic, and Pokemon, all CCGs. We are located off the central garden area, in Sandpebble A, for easy access! See you soon! Becky Thomas, Steve Kani, Greg Dachner, Cody Rose and all the other Young Players volunteer! CMBGs (Collectable Miniatures and Board Games) So, you want collectible miniatures games, do you? Well, we got 'em! Fantasy, space, superheroes, pirates... there's something for you. So check it out! Open a booster. Roll the bones. Lead your armies to victory. Come play with us. Special Events This year's Special Events looks great - with many new events, and some old ones changed and improved. Flea market: As many know last year's Flea Market was a rousing success that brought us face to face with the lack of space we have available for a Saturday and Sunday Flea Market. So the Flea Market is now on Monday only. We now have a great space - and tables for all. AND with all the other awesome events on Monday, it looks like the final day of the con will be action packed. Derk & Aldie's PodCast with Dr. Reiner Knizia and Guido Teuber: That's right! The gamers behind BoardGameGeek are coming to KublaCon!! They will play games, host seminars AND, on Saturday night, they record one of their great shows with two of our esteemed special guests. Amazing Seminars: Learn poker tips with James Ernest (author of two poker books, and the main man of Cheapass Games), listen to Charles Sharp and Dana Lombardy in our series of War College seminars, or bring your questions for Dr. Reiner Knizia. And so much more. Have you seen the Foyer: It is jam packed with cool things to do. Here are some examples - Aerodrome is back (Fri/Sat), Live Action Aliens board game (Sat), Giant-Sized Pirates Cove, Memoir '44, Phantasy Realm and Settlers of Catan (Sat-Mon), Carabande (with Action Set) (Mon), Huge and Mega Formula De (Fri, Mon), Games Workshop events (check for days/times), and so much more!!! And our special guests Dungeon Majesty will be located in the Foyer as well. Auction: AuctionMania is back and ready to sell your games! They did such a great job last year we begged them to return and they have. Young Player's Room: Over 100 children checked into the room to play a huge array of games... and this year we are ready for more. Miscellaneous: We have masseuses on site again this year with expanded hours on Monday. Find them in the Foyer. And don’t forget the Blood Drive. Details online. LARPS MORE LARPS THAN EVER! This year at KublaCon will be a hallmark of LARP quantity and quality. We have more LARPs this year than any year previous, and some of the best that the Bay Area have to offer. One World by Night will once again be presenting its annual three-night Vampire (Mind's Eye Theatre) event, set in a troubled Camarilla Domain, rife with unrest. Some of the greats of local LARP troupes are bringing their own creative might to the Con this year, including Chuckling Cthulhu, Wyld Coast Productions, Shiney Games and Dreams of Dierdre. Game settings to include Harry Potter's Hogwarts, Joss Wedon's Firefly Universe and the courts of Faerie. But wait! There's more! We've introduced a series of "Parlor LARPs"; cozy little things on a shorter time scale when a full-length LARP might be too much. Perfect for the first-timers! But we're not done! On Sunday, KublaCon is pleased to be host to a Special Gold Ticket LARP Event, an invitation-only prestige game of the highest caliber. Invitations are given to LARPers who have shown especial acumen in LARPs running earlier in the weekend, and are hand-picked by GMs and the KublaCon LARP staff for special recognition and guaranteed entry into this special event. No LARP enthusiast is going to go empty handed, this year. We have enough events running that there's no reason that everyone shouldn't be able to get into at least one of their favorites, and most will be able to LARP all weekend long! A note about LARP registration: This will be done by normal game registration, using the Priority Weighted GameShuffler system, but even if you don't get selected for the LARP that you absolutely MUST be in to make your weekend complete by this randomized method, you still have hope. One hour before the start time of each LARP a signup sheet will be posted at the event door - this is intended to fill slots by no-shows, by signups that don't fill a roster, and for GM-planned-upon overflow. We've no doubt that after the success we anticipate this year that KublaCon will be the premier convention for LARPs on the West Coast! David Oberholzer LARP Coordinator, KC05Producers Notes: Kublacon 2005 promises to be better and bigger than last year, keeping the streak alive of growing each and every year since conception. It's no small feat and we are proud of that distinction. But it wouldn't be true without the efforts of the staff, the volunteer GMs, other volunteers, dealers, prize donations, and of course, you the attendee. If you haven't taken the time to do so yet, please look over this year’s Program Guide. At 114 pages, it's the largest ever. With nearly 750 events, this year boasts about 50 more events than last year. Some of these events will draw upwards of 100 people, so be sure to signup early and secure your spot. (RPG events excepted since they go through the shuffler program) In the Program Guide, you will find the fruit of all the labors of those that help to make KublaCon one of the best pure gaming conventions in the US. Event listings are grouped by event type and also by day and time, making it easier for one to find the events they're interested in and also what's available to play at any time of the day or night. For those uncertain of what to play, KublaCon is offering a few "Beginners Track" events to give attendees a taste of what a game has to offer. For those new to KublaCon and the Hyatt Hotel, we also provide short 15-20 minute tours on Friday and Saturday, so that you're better able to navigate the hotel to the events you want to attend. As always, KublaCon staff members will be ready to help you with any issue and ensure you have a fun time. Cheers, Kevin O'Hare Well, if you've managed to read this far down the page... then you've probably figured out that this year's KublaCon has all the potential to make it the most exciting ever! We work hard all year to make this happen with a goal of bringing as much fun as possible... to as many people as possible!
For my part, I've convinced two of my regular Catan players to come to their first convention! Japji Khalsa |
