Reports from the field -- big plans already in the works!

Role Playing:

A new year and another KublaCon

Greetings and salutations from the KublaCon RPG staff!

We hope you had a fantastic holiday season and a happy new year.  Now that we’re officially in ’06, it’s time to start thinking about this year’s KublaCon.  Last year over 200 of you volunteered to help make KublaCon the premier gaming event in California and one of the best gaming experiences on the West Coast.  We hope you will come back to help out for a repeat performance. We have a lot of special guests coming back and many fun things to look forward to this year and as we get more details about them, you’ll continue to hear from us.

We are family! Got our new Staff Members with me!

We have several new members in our group to help out with the ever growing job of running RPG’s at KublaCon. Last year, we had Brian Williams come in literally at the last moment and turn in a spectacular superstar performance in helping out with putting on KublaCon 05. He did such a great job that we of course made him an official Staff Member and will be back again for this year.

Unfortunately, our wonderful RPGA Coordinator (George Rowland) will not be able to help out this year (and we will certainly miss him!). So in his stead, we will have Shelton Yee coming in and taking over his duties. Shelton is the newest member of the Pale triad and has been involved with Living Greyhawk since the beginning of the campaign. Shelton will be assisted by Bart Scott. You may know Bart as the gentleman who runs the "Theocracy by the Bay" event and has brought several special RPGA events to the Bay Area. Both of these guys have been involved with the RPGA for years and we can't wait to see what the RPGA will look like at KublaCon this year. Shelton and Bart promise another fantastic array of RPGA games to participate in this year and we will offer more details about them in future newsletters.

So please welcome Brain, Shelton and Bart and give them a hearty hello and huzzah for joining the KublaCon Family!

Four days in May

It’s never too early to start planning for the next KublaCon (May 26-29), and now that the New Year has rolled around, it’s the perfect time to start sending in those submissions. The earlier you submit your game proposal, the more likely you’ll get your game accepted and get the day and time of your preference. And of course, running a game gets you into the convention for free, and with a neat GM pin to boot.

Last year we had a wonderful range of games, and we have no doubt you’ll come through for us again. We can never have too much D20 or Cthulhu in our program and we will take as many of those games as we can get. Eberron D20 is also very popular especially since the creator of the campaign Keith Baker is scheduled to be in attendance. We love to see games using newer systems like Army of Darkness, Starship Troopers or Serenity (!!!!) and every year we get a few off the wall systems like Toons or Kobolds Ate My Baby that are a little off the radar. So send us something new, something old, something barrowed or something just plain ol’ weird! But what ever you do, get them sent in!

The Game Plan so far…

Due to the large number of submissions we had last year, we are changing the way we accept and schedule games this year. To utilize the space we have as best as possible, we will implement a fixed start time schedule for all games. The time slots that will be available are as follows:

Friday:
2:00 pm – 6:00 pm
6:00 pm – 2:00 am (or later)
Sat & Sun:
9:00 am – 3:00 pm
3:30 pm – 7:30 pm
8:00 pm – 2:00 am (or later)

Monday:
9:00 am – 5:00 pm

There will be just a handful of other miscellaneous time slots available (including a couple of Saturday and Sunday morning or afternoon 8 hour time slots), but we will mostly be reserving them for specific, special and/or overflow events and they may be handed out (if available) once we get closer to finalizing the schedule.

A call out to GM’s to help out

We are always looking for GM’s to run games at KublaCon but we do have a specific need for a few areas that need help. Please contact us at the below email if you are interested in helping out with the following events:

Young Player’s Room: Our young player’s room is for kids aged 8-15. If you like working with kids and you have a roleplaying game appropriate for this age group or wish to help run a Basic D20 game, please let us know and we will get you in touch with our Young Player’s Coordinator.

Beginners Track: We once again are planning to have a Beginners Track at KublaCon this year. This will be designed for people who are interested in playing a genre of game that they have never played before but want to learn. We would like to see several different RPG systems demonstrated and will need GM’s to help out and run these sessions. Here are the main systems we will need some help on: D20, Serenity, Cthulhu, Buffy, and the Hero Systems. Currently our plan is to use a 2-4 hour time slot to go over the basics of a particular system and then run a very short adventure to give people an idea of what it is like. If you want to help with this, send us a line and we’ll go from there.

Mega Dungeon Crawl: For the last two years, Troll Lord Games has designed an exclusive game module for KublaCon, The Temple of Kubla Khan and the Tomb of KublaCon (which can be found here if you are interested). Troll Lord will design yet another adventure for us and we will need a few GM’s to help out. The game will be run 3-5 times over the course of the weekend and we are looking for GM’s who are proficient with D20 3.5 edition rules. Give us a shout if you want to help out with this premiere event.

So long, and thanks for all the fish

Well, that’s pretty much for now.  Thanks for listening, and get those games in.  Early submissions are more likely to get accepted.  We look forward to hearing from you and talking to you.

Thanks and we’ll hopefully talk to you soon!

Prolific designer Reiner Knizia helped Kublacon start the Kniziathon 4 years ago, and once again Tabletop will be dominated on Sunday by Knizia games. Begin practicing, and plan for that early start to obtain the best score!

A Podcast from Kublacon's Tabletop Games Coordinator

Joining the ranks of boardgaming podcasts such as Boardgamespeak, Boardgamestogo, The Dice Tower, and Boardgame Babylon, your intrepid Tabletop Games Coordinator has started his own podcast at garrettsgames.com. The first two episodes are posted, with weekly posts headed your way.

And among other thing to look forward to:

• The 3rd Annual Uberplay-a-thon
• A 25-person Puerto Rico Tournament
• A 25-person Caylus Tournament
• B-17 on Saturday
• Recent releases from Essen 2005, such as Shear Panic and Il Principe

We would LOVE your input. If you are interested in being a GM for Tabletop, please submit your game request NOW rather than later. The schedule fills quickly, and we want to build a solid and diverse one.

Thanks!
