Reports from the field -- big plans already in the works!

Department Reports

KublaCon 2006 is taking form as we speak. The last submissions are coming in and the Event Directors have laid out some great events for you this year. Bigger, Larger, More... This is what you've asked for and KublaCon 2006 is getting prepared to deliver that and more.

Each event director has added new events and expanded your old favorites. Get ready to be blown away by the event schedule this year. With so many great events, you'll wish you could clone yourself to see and play it all (just remember to get some rest along the way!).

We're excited and we hope you will be too...

KublaCon Director of Events

Role Playing Games

Hey there and hello to all of you KublaCon fans. Boy oh boy, is this going to be a big year for us in roleplaying at KublaCon this year! With the RPGA gearing up to have over 100 tables worth of games, and the regular RPG event list getting close to 150 events, we will have a schedule of about 250 games for all of you Role-players out there to enjoy!

OK, here’s probably the MOST important paragraph to read here. Time has just about run out to get on board and submit your game. The official deadline is April 4th. But like last year, we will be closing the RPG submissions early again. While we would like to see a few more D20 events on the schedule, we just don’t have much room for anything else. So if you do have a D20 game you want to run, you will need to get it in right NOW!!!

Now for those of you have already made it on the train, we have contacted many of you to confirm your games. But there are still some of you that we have not had a chance to do so. We are still evaluating what game proposals we have in our database to confirm for the limited space we have left to put into the schedule. But be assured, we are working furiously to do so and each of you will be contacted soon.

KublaCon is great for one very specific reason. Yep, that’s right. You! We are the ones who put it together but it is through your games that make the event special. Now while we are specifically looking for a few more D20 games, we are still on the lookout for GM’s to help out in other areas at KublaCon. Please contact us if you are interested in helping out with the following areas:

Young Player’s Room: Our young player’s room is for kids aged 8-15. If you like working with kids (like all of you great gamer guys and gals bringing up gamer babies!) and you have a roleplaying game appropriate for this age group, please contact us or get in touch with Becky Thomas (our Young Players Coordinator) at kidsgames@kublacon.com if you would like to run it at KublaCon this year

Mega Dungeon Crawl: For the last two years, Troll Lord Games has designed an exclusive game module for KublaCon, The Temple of Kubla Khan and the Tomb of KublaCon (which can be found here if you are interested). Troll Lord has expressed interest in designing yet another adventure for us and we will need a few GM’s to help out. The game will be run 3-5 times over the course of the weekend and we are looking for GM’s who are proficient with D20 3.5 edition rules. Give us a shout if you want to help out with this premiere event.

KublaCon looks like it is going to be more fun then a barrel full of The Monkees and the schedule is looking like a dream! We certainly hope you folks will be coming to Con even if you don’t happen to be running any games yourselves. Here’s just a taste of some of the updated news for the Roleplaying area…

Anyone here know who Jamie Chambers is? Brownie points if you do. He just happens to be the author of the Serenity RPG system and we have just learned that he and his publishing company (Sovereign Press) will be attending KublaCon this year. Not only that, he has promised to GM a few Serenity games for as well. Woo Hoo!

The owner (and all around great guy) of Hero Games will be honoring us with a rare opportunity to roleplay with the biggest superhero in the universe! Super Dude Darren Watts himself! His events may even give Derek Heimforth a run for his money as the most wanted Hero games to attend.

You say you weren’t able to get into one of the biggest RPG events KublaCon 05? Bummed that you didn’t get to play in a game with the super fantastic Game Master and Eberron campaign designer Keith Baker?
Well this year, even if you don’t make it into the game, you can still make it into the game! 6 players will play in a ruthless adventure hand crafted by Keith himself, but there will be 9 openings for Audience participation! One of the player characters dies at the hand of a heartless Warforged Titan?
No problem! Some of the audience members could possibly have a “stand by” PC just waiting to take over. Some of you could play the part of mighty monsters to battle the party or be an NPC ready to offer aid (or better yet hinder them!).
The audience could even possibly determine the fate of the whole party at crucial moments in the game! Many other fun filled surprises wait those of you who attend.
So keep a lookout on our website for further updates to what is sure to be one of the biggest events at KublaCon 06!

The girls of Dungeon Majesty and their Dungeon Master extraordinaire were at the convention filming their 7th exciting episode, The Khan of Cons. They also ended up playing lots of games and just generally hanging out and having a good time. Of course our very own Kubla (amongst many other KublaCon staffers and attendees) could not resist getting his massive frame into the frame of their camera. The group also says they had a great time and are planning on making an encore performance this year with plans to film another spectacular show with us!

Thanks for listening, and get those D20 games in!  We look forward to seeing all of you folks at KublaCon and we’ll hopefully talk to you soon!

Thanks!  :o)

TABLETOP NEWS AND NOTES:

Settlers of Catan Regional - New Swiss-Format Rules

Back for its third consecutive year, the Settlers of Catan West Coast Regional will be switching formats this year to better reflect the way the tournament is now run elsewhere.  Instead of a 64-player single elimination tournament like in years past, this year we will use a Swiss-format with the following guidelines:

1)  Each contestant may play in any or all of the Qualifying Rounds with his/her best score counting for inclusion in the Semifinals.  Therefore, if you come for the Friday Qualifying Round, do well, and are satisfied with your score, you do not need to participate in the other Qualifying Rounds and will have a free Saturday to practice or play other things!  If your score holds up, you'll be in the Semis!

2)  In each Preliminary Round players will play 3 games back-to-back, randomly rotating opponents.

3)  Scoring works this way:

-Most wins in a round is the first item looked at.  So 3 wins is best, of course!

-The FIRST TIEBREAKER: Total points scored in the 3 games.  So if you won 2 games and came in second with 7 points in your third game, you would have a total of 27 points. (Note: it IS possible to win with more than 10 points. For example, if you are at 9pts... and win by taking the longest road... you have won the game with 11pts.)

-If there are STILL TIES: The second deciding factor is the sum of the percentage of points in each game played.

What exactly does that mean, you ask? Well, if you won your game and there were a TOTAL of 32 points scored by ALL PLAYERS at the table, then you have 31.25% of the points for the game (10 divided by 32).

Do that calculation for each of the 3 games, add them up, and compare.

THE THREE QUALIFYING ROUNDS ARE FRIDAY AT 7:00PM, SATURDAY AT 9:00AM AND SATURDAY AT 3:00PM WITH THE SEMIFINALS TAKING PLACE AT 10:00AM SUNDAY, FOLLOWED AT 4:00PM BY THE FINALS.

Old Standards & New Choices

First, many of those games you know and love will return once again for your KublaCon gaming enjoyment.  Here are some highlights (stop by the site for the times):

-Diplomacy Tournament (Edi runs a great show!)

-B-17 (Ron Plunk dons his uniform to lead his pilots on another important bombing raid)

-Advanced Civilization (you know you want to spend ALL NIGHT building your country into a powerhouse!)

-Axis and Allies (time to fight World War II once again)

-The Puerto Rico Tournament (hugely popular last year)

And if you're interested in trying something new, here are a few of the possibilities:

-Caylus Tournament (come learn the game from Ted on Friday, then play in Saturday's tournament once you're an expert)

-Elasund (the latest from Catan master Klaus Teuber)

-Cool Card Games (come find out the latest new releases in non-collectible card games from Greg)

-Il Principe & Shear Panic (two of Essen's hot properties that Eric will GM)

-Inner Circle (KublaCon Design Contest Winner last year, by Jeff Morrow)

-Railroad Tycoon (you want a big game, well come check this out!)

Then, of course, there are the A-Thons!

Come test your skills at a variety of marathon gaming sessions as well:

1)  The Fourth Annual KNIZIATHON - Come test your skills at Reiner Knizia's huge catalogue of games on Sunday.

2)  The Third Annual Uberplay-A-Thon - Friday's early-bird contest!  Come play the games of Uberplay.

3)  The First Annual Simplyfun-A-Thon - Gamemaster Candy will teach you all of these beautiful family-oriented titles Saturday evening.

Meet and play games with our special guests!

Derk and Aldie of Boardgamegeek.com and Boardgamespeak RETURN!  Come play games with them, sit in on one of their discussion sessions, or watch a Boardgamespeak get recorded.

The Days of Wonder team will once again be on hand with GIANT versions of their games, along with new releases!

Remember - STOP BY TABLETOP GAMES AND SIGN UP FOR A SPOT IN AN EVENT IN THE BINDERS.  PREFERENCE IN LIMITED-SPACE EVENTS IS GIVEN TO THOSE WHO HAVE SIGNED UP.

Looking forward to seeing all of you in May!

Miniatures

Miniatures Special Guests Galore!

The Miniatures Team is happy to announce that we will have some great special guests for you this year! We’ve confirmed with Mongoose Publishing that Matthew Sprange, author many of the supplements for hit new miniatures game “Starship Troopers,” along with classics such as “Babylon 5: A Call to Arms” and “Gangs of Mega City One” will be attending KublaCon to answer all your burning questions about upcoming Starship Troopers releases, including the new race!

Chris FitzPatrick, of Crocodile Games, creator, author of “Wargods of Ægyptus” will be back this year with some very special events planned for all of you! Chris is also an accomplished sculptor and painter and has worked for Ral Partha, Global Games, AEG, and Games Workshop before turning his energies to his own creation “Wargods of Ægyptus.”

Hailing from Aberrant Games, Simon Mackenzie, creator and author of “Rezolution: A Dark Tomorrow” will be back this year along with some great “Rezolution” events for all those cyberpunk fans out there. Simon is a 20 year veteran of the entertainment industry, whose credits not only includes the game industry, both retail and development, but also film, television and music.

The War College is back again this year with Charles Sharp who wrote the Marlborough Supplement to the popular Age of Reason 18th century rules and most recently helped with the research and writing of the Battlefront rules, which simulate tactical battles in World War Two; Dana Lombardy who has worked as a researcher, consultant, cartographer, designer, editor, speaker and writer on more than 100 military history projects and was winner of a 1980 Origins award for his Streets of Stalingrad company-level simulation; and a new addition to the War College this year is Darren Layne.

Intelligence reports have also put Andy Chambers, author of Mongoose Publishing’s “Starship Troopers” and former Warhammer 40,000 Overfiend, in attendance of KublaCon this year. While Andy won’t be joining us on behalf on a manufacture this year, he has a long history with KublaCon, having joined us in 2002, then again in 2004 and 2005; we consider Andy a member of the KublaCon family and are pleased to hear he will be in attendance.

We Still Need Your Events!

We still have space left if you want to run a miniatures event at KublaCon, and now’s the time to submit your events. Our April 4th events submission deadline is fast approaching, so don’t delay in submitting your event. You can submit your event by visiting the KublaCon web site (www.kublacon.com) or by e-mailing miniatures@kublacon.com.

We look forward to seeing you at KublaCon this year, until then – game on!

Hello from the Young Players Room!

Super Schedule!

Wow! We've got a fantastic schedule lined up for our 8 - 16 year old players! This last month we've added a whole bunch of RPGs, including 2 more sessions Dwarven Forge D&D from Scott Bagley; two Teen Titans games, one on Saturday with the HERO Sidekick system and one on Sunday using the BASH system. We've also got a modern take on an old classic: "Escape from Zanzer's Dungeon", on Saturday. We'll see our usual bunch of Warhammer 40K short games, a ton of board games and three new Abantey missions.

Looking for a few Good Volunteers!

We're still looking for some super GMs/moderators to run some intro level CCGs and CMBGs. And it would be really fantastic for our new players if we could get a historical miniatures game. While running a game in the Young Players room sounds like an overwhelming task, the rewards of passing on the torch (as it were) are endless. We're shepherding the next generation of gamers on their first steps into the gaming community. We're teaching them the joy of all the different types of games our community enjoys. Be a part of the experience! Run or supervise a game in the YP Room!
